Portland, OR—As the frontline caregivers and hospital staff who keep our healthcare system running, we are deeply troubled by the Trump administration’s decision to deploy the military into Oregon communities. This decision is not about keeping families safe; it is about spreading fear and sowing division in service of a cynical political agenda that prioritizes the wealthy while ignoring the real needs of working people.

Every day—as nurses, physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs), technicians, certified nursing assistants (CNAs), dietary aides, custodial staff, and countless others—we care for patients, comfort families, and keep hospitals and clinics operating, often while understaffed and under-resourced. We know what true safety looks like: patients receiving care without delay; families knowing they can afford prescriptions, rent, and groceries; and caregivers having the support and resources they need to do their jobs.

This political stunt carries real dangers for people seeking care. By targeting black, brown, immigrant, and working-class communities, Trump risks scaring people away from hospitals and clinics when they are sick and need care the most. When people delay treatment, manageable conditions can become life-threatening, and mild illnesses can escalate into severe emergencies—putting lives directly at risk.

As healthcare workers, we will do everything in our power to protect our patients and our communities to ensure they get the care they need in the face of a military occupation.

Our unions stand united with working families, elected officials, and all Oregonians to oppose Trump’s militarization of our neighborhoods. We speak with one voice to say clearly: No soldiers in our streets. Our communities and our healthcare system need investment, not violence and intimidation.
